About

Tatiana Lupashina is a Russian-American neuroscientist and visual artist. She is the Co-Founder and President of EDGE Neuroscience & Art e.V., for which she has been producing and curating multimedia group exhibitions and workshops since 2018.

Together with Philip DePoala, they are the lead artists of Oculus, an ongoing developing interactive sculpture featuring the neurobiology of the eye and embodying the spirit of EDGE.

Who is EDGE?

Edge e.V. is an international group of artist-scientists studying and researching neuroscience in Berlin. A community, with varied perspectives on the intersections between art and neuroscience.

EDGE urges neuroscientists, artists, and the public to humanize the scientist and to explore the border or lack there of between the fields. Their multi-media exhibitions show art of various artists addressing topics around the brain, from and of neuroscience labs, their members, their motivations, and the research findings, to bridge the divide between the lab bench and the outside world.

Why does eye square collaborate and host EDGE events?

The cooperation between EDGE e.V. and eye square GmbH was initiated by CEO Michael Schießl. Over time, a close collaboration has developed, the symbol of which is the artwork “Oculus” by Tatiana Lupashina and Philipp De Poala. This object installation, inspired by the human eye, is currently in the Eye Square Art Hall.

This year, EDGE’s lecture and workshop series “Sensoriality 2023” took place on our premises to great acclaim. The event clearly showed how closely eye square’s studies and research on perception and meaning (Human Experience Research and the topic of “Meaningful Attention”) are linked to EDGE’s artistic and scientific positions on neuroscientific research into sensory impressions.

According to the latest research in this field, the human sensory apparatus proves to be physically and psychologically closely linked to cognition and emotion. The body’s perception of the world is viewed as a whole as a synergetic system of high differentiation and complexity that transcends the boundaries of body and mind to produce meaning.
