1. What is the scope of digital accessibility?
Digital accessibility involves creating digital content and technologies that can be used by people with a wide range of disabilities, including visual, auditory, physical, and cognitive impairments. Disabilities can be temporary or permanent, and they can vary in severity from mild to severe.
Digital accessibility not only caters to individuals with disabilities but also addresses the needs of the elderly population. Due to physical, cognitive, or sensory limitations, many older adults encounter barriers when accessing and utilizing digital technology.
By ensuring that digital products and services are designed with accessibility in mind, we can ensure that all individuals can benefit from the full potential of digital technology, rather than being excluded or marginalized by it.
2. Your product follows the accessibility guidelines, why is further research needed?
In addition to the effort from developers of integrating and adhering to web accessibility guidelines like WCAG, the lack of consideration for real user experience. This oversight can hinder the ability to ensure full access and engagement with your product, despite technical testing.
Failing to incorporate real user experience into the development process can result in a product that only meets the minimum requirements of accessibility guidelines, rather than one that truly meets the needs of users with disabilities. This can cause frustration and dissatisfaction for users and potentially lead to them abandoning the product altogether.
Therefore, it is crucial to not only adhere to accessibility guidelines but also incorporate real user feedback and testing to ensure that the product is truly accessible and usable for all users, including those with disabilities.
3. Are there any legal implications for lack of accessibility?
The European Accessibility Act is a legislative act adopted by the European Union in 2019, aimed at improving the accessibility of products and services for people with disabilities. Member States have until June 28, 2025, to transpose it into their national laws.
The act requires that products and services meet specific accessibility standards. Failure to comply with the European Accessibility Act can have serious legal and financial implications for businesses and organizations operating in the European Union. Non-compliance can result in fines, legal action, and reputational damage, as well as exclusion from public procurement processes.
4. How compatible is your digital product with assistive technologies?
Assistive technologies are tools designed to help individuals with disabilities access digital content and interact with technology e.g. screen readers. The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) provide guidance on how to design accessible digital content, and assistive technologies play a critical role in achieving WCAG compliance. By considering the needs of users with disabilities and designing content that is compatible with assistive technologies, developers can create inclusive and accessible digital experiences for all users.
5. What makes web and app navigation especially difficult for screen reader users?
Due to non-compliance with accessibility standards, screen readers often face difficulty in accessing information on websites and applications.
It is recommended to conduct user testing with a variety of screen readers (e.g. Voiceover; Talkback, JAWS) to test the compatibility of your product with this particular assistive technology.
Main pain points:
a. Lack of consistent labeling hinder users to easily understand the purpose, function, and/or status of actionable controls (e.g. links, button)
b. Visually based cues and uncaptioned images are not useful indicators for screen reader users and prevent access to critical information
c. Lack of consistency in structure and element design hinders orientation and navigation
